AT least 30 people drawn from Government departments in Chipinge received certificates in First Aid after completing a two-month training course spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society. The participants underwent First Aid training that was aimed at equipping them with skills on how to rescue victims and disaster causalities in the district.
Red Cross also awarded certificates to some members of the District Civil Protection Unit in areas like Chibuwe, Mutema and Chisumbanje where natural disasters such as floods are prevalent.
Zimbabwe Red Cross Society Manicaland provincial programmes manager Mr Paddington Munjoma said as an organisation they saw it fit to equip members of the Civil Protection Unit with skills to save lives in the event of a disaster.
He said the course was mainly focusing on the practicals which help members to be active when disaster strikes.
“Disasters are prevalent year-in-year in Chipinge hence the district should be fully prepared to deal with them.
“We find it neccesary to have members who can holistically save lives whenever accidents and disasters occur. Many people in the district continue to lose lives in controllable situations.
“Recently, we witnessed the Chisumbanje ethanol disaster where people lost their lives because there were no immediate solutions when the disaster happened,” he said.
