Thirty people were killed while 104 were injured in 337 road traffic accidents recorded during this year’s Easter holiday.

Of the 337 accidents, 22 were fatal.

During the same period last year, 24 people died, while 178 were injured.

A total of 384 road traffic accidents were recorded last year, with 21 of them being fatal.

In an interview, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said no major road traffic accident involving public service vehicles was recorded during this year’s Easter holiday.

Of the 30 people who lost their lives on the country’s roads this year, 19 were pedestrians, seven were passengers, while three were drivers and one was a motorcycle rider.

“On the eve of the period under review, on 2 April 2026, a fatal road traffic accident was recorded and six family members were killed when a Toyota Corolla had a head-on collision with a truck at the 246 km peg along the Harare–Masvingo Road.

“The majority of the 30 people killed were pedestrians, accounting for 19 deaths, approximately 63 percent of the total. Passengers represented the second-largest group, with seven fatalities, roughly 23 percent. Drivers accounted for three deaths (10 percent) and one rider was killed, making up just over three percent of the total.

“During the 2026 Easter holiday, speeding was identified as the leading cause of the road traffic accidents, with many motorists losing control of their vehicles and overturning. Unsafe overtaking also contributed to the head-on collisions recorded during the period,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
