30 years for raping minor relative

RAPING an under-aged relative earned a Rusape man 30 years behind bars. Petros Mhandu (49) of Samanyika Village in Chief Mutasa’s area, who was not represented, will serve 25 years after Rusape regional magistrate, Mr Livingstone Chipadza suspended five years on condition of good behaviour.

Mhandu had pleaded not guilty, arguing that he was in love with the minor (12). Mhandu is married to the girl’s aunt. Representing the State, Mr James Wirima said Mhandu sexually abused the girl two times during the absence of his wife.

He further said the girl, who does not have both parents, reported the rape to another aunt who made a police report, leading to Mhandu’s arrest.

In sentencing Mhandu, Mr Chipadza did not have any kind words for him.
He said Mhandu abused the trust bestowed on him to look after the child.

“Your moral blameworthiness is very high in this case. The complainant was staying with you after the death of her parents. She looked up to you for protection and you were her ‘saviour’. She is merely 12 and you are 49. You breached the trust bestowed on you to look after the child.

“She will have traumatic effects for the rest of her life. She will grow up knowing she was deflowered by a person she did not love,” said Mr Chipadza.
