RAINS accompanied with strong winds experienced in most parts of the country this week destroyed classroom block and a teachers’ house at Hute Mukudza Primary School and St Andrew’s Primary School in Marange.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Chief Director for Manicaland Province, Mr Richard Gabaza, said: “According to the report I have, one of their classroom blocks and one teachers’ house had their roofs blown off by heavy winds and rains. 10 asbestoses were broken and several window panes were also damaged. A good number of exercise books and textbooks were destroyed by the storm,” said Mr Gabaza.
However, this newspaper also gathered that St Andrew’s Primary School in Murai Village also experienced similar destruction to property.

In a separate interview, Ministry of Local Government and Public Works Provincial Deputy Director for Local Government Services and Administration, Mr John Misi, said: “Mutare did not pick that (Marange schools destruction) unfortunately, but as usual, we encourage all schools and community members to be proactive and retrofit classroom infrastructure as well as shelter.

“To those constructing new buildings, we urge them to be build better the first time and to adhere to council building codes. Public and private infrastructure to be insured against damage to allow resilience.”
