This is the second tournament at the bar after it held another doubles tournament in August this year.
“We are hoping this will be an annual event. At the end of the pool season from this year on we will be holding this doubles tournament,” said Themba Masuku, the Ayobar manager.
He said they had up to $1 200 in prizes with the winners getting $300, individual trophies and a case of beer.
The second placed team will get $200, a shield and a crate of beer while the third and fourth will get $100 and $50 including a crate of beer each.
Zozo Mweneziko who is the organiser of the tournament said they also received assistance from Delta Beverages.
“Anyone who can play pool can register. We encourage women to register as well because we have lots of prizes for them,” he said.
Only a few women in the city play the sport as it is usually held in bars.
Masuku said registration starts today and it is $4 a pair and late registration fee is $5.
“The draw will be held on Saturday before the matches start in the afternoon.
“There are no singles so everyone has to have a partner,” he said.
Top pool players are expected to take part in the competition.
Some of the big names expected to make an impact are the champions of 2011, Kings’ marksman Paul Mutizo and Wisdom Mkhize.
They will be closely checked by Peter Dziko’s expertise as he is sure to give them a good run for their money.
Also expected to weigh in with a challenge is West Comm’s Prince Prosper Nsingo and Ephraim Manongore who scooped top accolades in the Fast Cash tourney but the duo failed to save their
team when it was mauled 12-1 by Drill Hall last week.
The women’s section will not be without its fair share of the thrills as experienced players like Sipho Mpofu the reigning national champion, Noma Manguni of Skittle Inn and Shyllet Musonho of Exchange will make sure their names are on the winners’ list. Not to be ruled out is King’s Tsitsi Mahonye who played a blinder in previous tournaments as well as Susan Chizema and Beauty Ndebele.
