The City of Harare has entered into a strategic joint venture agreement with Consortium Zimbabwe for the construction of a $30 million multi-purpose business complex at Chishawasha Grounds in Mbare.

This was revealed by Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo in a speech read on his behalf by principal director in the ministry Mrs Eric Jones recently at a meeting on facilitation of the informal sector held at Siyaso.

“Joint venture programmes are a source of funding as being advocated for in the Zim-Asset for purposes of employment creation, wealth generation and infrastructure development,” he said.

Minister Chombo said the shopping mall would accommodate various types of businesses.

“The key components of the multi-purpose complex are a modern shopping mall to accommodate banks, supermarkets, food courts, traditional meal canteens and other support structures. A state-of-the-art flea market to accommodate six thousand informal traders.”

“A multi-purpose sports facility consisting basketball and tennis courts and a five-a-side soccer to cater for recreational needs,” he said.

In November last year Harare City Council approved $45 million project for Mbare Musika after signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Olshevick Investments for upgrading the bus terminus.

The project includes construction of a shopping mall and a parkade.

These projects are part of council’s plan to develop Harare into a world-class city.
