THIRTY-THREE people were injured, three of them seriously, when the driver of a Bulawayo bound bus slept on the wheel resulting in the vehicle losing control before plunging into a ditch along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road yesterday.
Police confirmed that the unidentified driver of the bus, which is owned by CAG Travellers, veered off the road on approaching the 57km peg at 3am and plunged into a ditch.

“From the information we got from our officers who attended the scene, the bus driver admitted that he slept and lost control resulting in the bus veering off the road,” said Superintendent Felix Mnkandla, the acting officer commanding police in Lupane District.

“The bus had 56 passengers on board and 30 were injured, three of them seriously. We are yet to get the full details of the accident.”
The injured were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Mpilo Central Hospital spokesperson Matron Margaret Tshuma confirmed that the injured were attended save for the three who had severe injuries.

“Yes, the injured were attended to and discharged. Only three who sustained serious injuries were admitted,” she said.
