NEW DELHI — More than 35 people were killed and at least 40 others injured when a speeding train ran over them in the eastern Indian state of Bihar yesterday, a senior police official said. “The mishap happened when a large number of people, mostly pilgrims on their way to a local fair, were crossing railway tracks at Dhamara station near Saharsha in Bihar. The superfast train, Rajya Rani Express, was on track number three and on high speed as Dhamara was not a scheduled stop for it. The train ran over the pilgrims who were crossing the tracks and more than 35 died on the spot,” he said on condition of anonymity.
The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some is said to be critical, the official said.
Meanwhile, the driver of the train, which runs between the state capital Patna and Saharsha, has also been admitted to a hospital where he is said to be battling for his life.
“An angry mob nearly lynched the train driver after the incident,” he said.
Rail services have been disrupted in the area and two relief trains have been sent, a railway official said.
Trains running over people are common in India as they often don’t use the foot bridge to cross tracks. — Xinhua.
