4 die in Masvingo accidents

FOUR people have died on the spot in two separate accidents in Masvingo. In the first accident, three people died while going to a funeral with a dead body at the 1km peg along the Neshuro-Matibi Road when their vehicle fell into a river after it rolled back from a slope.The other incident in which one person died, at the 5km peg along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, was a head-on collision.

Police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said both accidents occurred on Sunday at around 1AM and 7PM respectively.

She said in the first incident the vehicle was carrying a dead body and seven passengers.

Insp Mazula identified those who died in that accident as Vongai Hwarawara,74, Ever Moyo, 44, of Tokwane Ngundu and Clarisa Chivigo of Mataga in Mberengwa.

Ivy Mukarakati, 25, a student who was on an internship in Masvingo, died in the second accident which was a head-on collision.

In the first accident that claimed three people Insp Mazula said: “Upon arriving at 1km peg along the same road where there was a steep slope, the driver, Lapuma Mpofu, 44 of Ngundu Business Centre, failed to proceed resulting in the car rolling backwards. The vehicle rolled back until it fell into Chishonga river nearby and Hwarawara, Moyo and Chivigo drowned but the other four including Mpofu, the driver, managed to swim out.”

She said villagers rushed to the scene but found the three already dead.

Insp Mazula said on the same day at around 7PM, along the Masvingo-Mbalabala road a Toyota Runx and Toyota Dyna truck were involved in a head-on collision killing one passenger on the spot and injuring five others.

She said Mukarakati died from serious head injuries.
