FOUR Supreme Court judges have lost keys to their chambers, a development that poses a serious security threat at Mashonganyika Building that houses the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court. The disappearance of the keys comes barely a week after some unknown people broke into the chambers of Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku and sole a desktop computer and a television set.
However, the names of the judges could not be disclosed yesterday.
Our Harare Bureau understands that the Judicial Services Commission acting secretary Justice Rita Makarau, yesterday wrote to the Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri, requesting police security at the court.
Currently, Mashonganyika Building is being manned by a private security company called Rangers Security.
Burglars broke into Chief Justice Chidyausiku’s chambers at the Supreme Court on Sunday night and stole a computer and a television set.
After the first incident, Justice Makarau assured the public that the loss of the Chief Justice’s computer had no effect on any court matters or judgments pending before the Chief Justice or the Supreme and Constitutional courts.
She believed the theft could have been motivated by a search for some information while the television set case could be mere theft for financial gain.
Justice Makarau said the break in was the first of its kind in the history of the Judiciary.
“It is the first such breaking into the judges’ chambers although we could have heard some related cases involving magistrates.
“We believe the police will do their best to establish the truth,” she said.
