FOUR Zimbabwean match officials will take charge of the game between Mozambique and Zambia in Maputo this weekend in an African qualifier for next year’s Under-20 championship finals in Senegal.
According to information released by the Confederation of African Football last week, Norman Matemera will be in charge of the match.
He will be assisted by Minda High School teacher Salani Ncube, new-comer Edgar Rumeck with Thabani Tessema Bamala as the fourth official.
Zimbabwe referees’ chief Omega Sibanda welcomed the appointments. He said it showed confidence in the local officials adding that he was confident that it was the beginning of better things to come with Afcon finals next among the targets.
“This is the beginning of a new era, a lot is coming. There will be flying more frequently. We are targeting Afcon finals next year,” said Sibanda, also Zifa vice-president.
Sibanda replaced Ndumiso Gumede as the referees’ boss in the country by virtue of being vice-president of Zifa.
Ncube and Matemera have had two other assignments in the continent this season.
Sibanda said they would continue to push referees over the limit so that they make their mark on the international scene.
