At least 40 countries will be represented at the African Parliamentary Union (APU) 78th executive committee meeting and 44th conference to be held in Victoria Falls in November.
This was said by APU secretary-general Mr Idi Gado Boubacar yesterday after paying a courtesy call on Senate President Mabel Chinomona at Parliament Building.
Mr Boubacar is in the country to assess Zimbabwe’s preparations for the important meetings.
In an interview after the meeting, Mr Boubacar thanked Zimbabwe for offering to host the meeting and said 40 countries were expected to be represented at the conference in November.
“It’s a conference that will gather at least 40 parliaments, with a lot of guests.
“It would be a big event, so it’s an honour for Zimbabwe to host such a conference.”
Mr Boubacar said his visit was meant to assess the preparations and sign the host agreement with the Zimbabwe Parliament ahead of the conference.
“I would like to thank the President of the Senate for agreeing to meet us despite her busy schedule,” he said.
Mr Boubacar said they had also discussed the role of women in the APU.
He signed the host agreement between the APU and Zimbabwe with Clerk of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Chokuda, yesterday.
The agreement was to formalise Zimbabwe’s commitment to host the event.
Cde Chinomona was elected vice president of the executive committee representing Southern Africa at the last conference held in 2020 in Djibouti.
Speaking on arrival in Zimbabwe on Monday, Mr Boubacar said the scourge of terrorism that has affected a number of countries, especially in West Africa would dominate discussions at the conference.
