Cuba and Zimbabwe will have reached 43 years on April 20 since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
This relationship started on April 20, 1980, just two days after Zimbabwe attained independence.
Cuba contributed to Zimbabwean’s independence struggle. Cuba was one of the first countries to recognise the Republic of Zimbabwe as a sovereign state.
The sister nation of Zimbabwe highly appreciates the humble contribution by Cuba from 1970 to this day.
About 3 000 Zimbabweans have graduated from Cuban universities in various professional areas. Zimbabwe-Cuba graduates have excelled and contributed immensely to the economic, political and social development of the country.
The year 2022 was fruitful for Zimbabwe — Cuba relations.
The two nations signed agreements for the technology transfer. The project entails the construction of plants for the production of medicines and medical consumables for veterinary and human consumption.
Currently, four Cuban lecturers are working at Bindura University of Science Education in Mashonaland Central.
The collaboration with this educational institution has been the paradigm of the co-operation in this sector.
Cuba’s co-operation in the health sector began in 1987, Cuban doctors, nurses and technicians were deployed in various provinces of Zimbabwe in support of the health system which has span for 36 years.
Fifteen more Cuban doctors and technicians are expected in Zimbabwe soon.
Both countries are willing to continue the bilateral co-operation with the view of extending it to other sectors of common interest.
The both nations have shared the same ideals of their independence, sovereignty to improve the livelihood of their societies without any foreign interference.
During these 43 years, both nations have experienced economic challenges due to foreign interference.
Cuba has the support of Zimbabwe in its battle against the Blockade of the United States of America.
In the same manner Cuba denounces the illegal sanctions imposed by Western powers against the sister nation of Southern Africa.
The economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba was intensified during the Trump administration with the implementation of 243 more measures.
Cuba was the only country that the Biden government did not exempt from unilateral sanctions in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic for humanitarian reasons.
Despite this situation, Cuba is a stable, secure and united country, capable of facing its great challenges with creative effort. Cuba will defend its revolution and continue building its nation.
Africa and Cuba are inextricably linked by their culture, customs and religion. Africans intervened decisively in the creation of the Cuban nationality.
In this regard, the Commander in Chief and former Cuban President, Fidel Castro Ruz, expressed: “Without Africa, without its children, without its culture and customs, without its languages and its gods, Cuba would not be what it is today.
