A TOTAL of 45 MDC-T members from Matjinge in Bulilima East Constituency have defected to Zanu-PF at the party’s rally.
MDC-T has lost more than 80 members from the area which was their stronghold in the constituency.A total of 38 other party supporters recently defected to Zanu-PF in protest over the imposition of National Assembly candidate, Mr Norman Mpofu.
On Friday the defectors surrendered their party regalia and cards during the rally at Gambo.
Speaking at the rally, Zanu-PF Politburo Member Cde Richard Ndlovu applauded the defectors for making a noble choice.
“We would like to congratulate you for finally realising the grave mistake that you had made by being followers of MDC-T. We have been trying to knock some sense through your heads for the past 13 years and finally our efforts have paid off.
“It concerned us as the revolutionary party when we would hold rallies in the past and only a handful of you turn up. At least you have finally come to realise that MDC-T leaders that you were rallying behind were only deceiving you,” he said.
Cde Ndlovu urged the new party members to vote for Zanu-PF in the Wednesday elections.
“I would like to assure you that you have come to the right party. The revolutionary party has a solid background and so does our President.
“President Mugabe is a tried and tested leader. He has proved his dedication towards safeguarding the people’s liberation. He has a deep revolutionary background which dates back to the time he was arrested for fuelling the liberation struggle whereas Mr Morgan Tsvangirai has no slightest idea of what the liberation struggle was about,’’ said Cde Ndlovu.
He urged the community of Gambo to retrace the development initiatives, which were introduced by Zanu-PF 13 years ago.
“While this area was under Zanu-PF a secondary school was built when children had no place to go, the water challenges were addressed. You have forgotten all this and rallied behind MDC-T which has done nothing for you,” said Cde Ndlovu.
One of the defectors who had served as the MDC-T Matjinge ward chairperson and organising secretary in the past 13 years, Joseph Msebele said the party leaders never fulfilled their promises of development.
“I have been with MDC-T since 2000. During that time I was the ward’s chairperson and organising secretary. I was a very active and influential member of the party.
“I finally realised the mistake I had made by being a member of the party. I have never seen any development within our ward for the past 13 years. I used to do a lot of groundwork to ensure the party always regained its seat within the ward but I have realised that I was making a grave mistake,” he said.
He said he had managed to convince a number of people within his area to rally behind a more stable party which is Zanu-PF.
“I can best describe MDC-T members as prodigal sons and daughters.
They are lost as they are rallying behind a party with no future and past.
“My advice for them is to search deep and they will realise that Zanu-PF has always been people driven from the time it won us independence up until now. I think it is high time people stopped parties with empty promises,” he said.
