ONE person was killed while several others were left injured after a violent gang of suspected criminals went on a rampage, terrorising villagers and laying siege to their homes in the Famona/Muckklenock area of Bubi, about 60km from Bulawayo.

The shocking incident, which occurred at around 11.20pm on October 16, left the community traumatised, with police confirming that five of the suspected 15 gang members have since been arrested.

The gang reportedly ran amok in the area, attacking villagers and unleashing violence that resulted in one fatality and several injuries.

The attackers allegedly descended on homesteads under the cover of darkness, with residents raising the alarm and reporting the incident to the police as the gang terrorised the community.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying investigations were underway to account for all those involved in the violent attacks.

“On October 16, at around 11.20pm, at Bluemoon Night Club, a gang of 15 people terrorised villagers in the Famona/Muckklenock area of Bubi. Community members reported the attacks, during which the gang also laid siege to their homes,” he said.

“One person was killed while several others were injured. So far, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while investigations are continuing to account for the remaining members of the gang.”

Comm Nyathi warned members of the public against resorting to violence and engaging in criminal activities, particularly cattle rustling and disputes linked to mining operations.

He said the police would not tolerate acts of lawlessness that threaten the safety and security of communities, adding that everyone implicated in the incident would face the full wrath of the law.

“We want to warn members of the public against engaging in violent crimes and activities, especially cattle rustling and those involved in mining activities.

“People should not take the law into their own hands or use violence to settle disputes. All perpetrators will be brought to justice without fear or favour,” said Comm Nyathi.

Police investigations are continuing as efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects gather pace.
Comm Nyathi said the incident has once again highlighted concerns over violent criminal gangs operating in rural communities, where attacks on villagers threaten livelihoods, property and the safety of residents.
