FIVE police officers were confirmed dead yesterday following a horrific commuter omnibus accident near Gweru on Wednesday.
As reported in Chronicle yesterday, three officers were killed instantly when the Toyota Hiace people carrier going to Harare from Bulawayo burst a rear left tyre and overturned.
Yesterday, it was confirmed that two more had succumbed to their injuries as Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri spoke of his sadness.
Eleven survivors were being treated for various injuries – most of them serious – at Gweru Provincial Hospital. The officers were travelling to Harare to attend promotion interviews when tragedy struck on approach to the Vungu River Bridge. The vehicle overturned and landed on its wheels facing south, the direction it had come from.
The tragic officers have been named as Sergeant Knowledge Mushava of Bulawayo Camps and Hostels Headquarters, Constable Sophia Chinyerere of Bulawayo Operations, Constable Claudius Mafaune of Bulawayo Provincial Headquarters, Constable Muzembere of Construction Section Unit 4 in Bulawayo and Constable Elizabeth Mangezi of Bulawayo Central Courts Section.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said Commissioner-General Chihuri has sent his condolences to the bereaved families.
“He also wished the injured a speedy recovery,” she said.
