“This year’s fire season started on July 31 and it is going to end on October 31. So far we have five cases of people killed by veld fires across the country.
“This relates to the total of 799 cases of fires that have been reported to our offices or under surveillance on our satellite system. Eighty-three tickets have been issued out to offenders.
“In our records, the police currently have more than 30 cases of offenders arrested for starting the fires,” he said.
Mr Kangata said people were ignoring messages conveyed to them on how to fight fires. “People are not taking our messages seriously relating to the damage that can be caused by veldfires.”
He said year veldfires destroyed 347 356 hectares.
