At least five people died on the spot yesterday when the vehicle they were travelling in burst a front tyre before colliding with a bus near Zindoga Shopping Centre, along Simon Mazorodze Road in Harare.Several other people on the bus escaped with injuries.
The vehicle, a Toyota Raum, was heading towards Mbudzi roundabout, while the bus belonging to G Muzanga Transport was driving into town from Nerupiri in Gutu, Masvingo.
When The Herald visited the scene soon after the accident, the lifeless bodies, some of them mangled, were scattered on the roadside with scores of people gathered.
Witnesses said the driver of the Toyota Raum was speeding and failed to control the vehicle after it burst a tyre. Albert Nyemba, a builder who was repairing a security wall at Entroburg close to the scene, said he heard a screeching sound of breaks and went to investigate. “I saw the driver of the Toyota Raum trying to avoid ramming into a parked vehicle on the roadside,” he said.
“He failed to control his vehicle which spun off its lane to the opposite lane before colliding with the bus. It then landed on its roof, blocking vehicles in the opposite lane.”
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said they were investigating the accident. He said the five occupants of the Toyota Raum who died on the spot were two women and three men. “Of concern to us is that of these five deceased people, no one had any form of identification,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.
“We are appealing to the public to carry their identity cards when moving from one place to another.”
