HERENTALS College ensured they kept pace with the leading pack after beating TelOne in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Rufaro this afternoon.
Lot Chiwunga and substitute Wilmore Chimbetu scored either side of halftime to take The Students to 45 points, seven behind leaders Scottland who play MWOS at the same venue tomorrow.
Herentals jumped a place up the ladder, overtaking Dynamos who are on 44 points with a game against ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga coming this Saturday.
But it is the spirit and mentality that The Eagles are showing this season, clipping this victory at the back of another inspiring win over FC Hunters the last time out.
“I’m impressed, especially considering that we have two injuries on the defence, and Joseph Chitavira picked a red card in the last game. Having the boys that were not playing coming in and doing so well makes me very happy,” said Herentals coach Paul Benza.
“The win is very important, it is a motivator because of where we are now.
“We are not putting ourselves under pressure. We are just taking each game as it comes.”
TelOne arrived into this game with a spring in their step after beating giants CAPS United 1-0 in their previous encounter.
But they never matched Herentals in every phase and aspect throughout the game with the WiFi Boys even finishing the match with a man short after their goalkeeper Takudzwa Chikosi received a second yellow for remonstration having initially been booked when he conceded a penalty by pulling down an opponent.
TelOne never really arrived at Rufaro, a venue they have never come out with full points this season and their struggle for survival continues at the base side of the log.
Chiwunga took full advantage of some lapse in the TelOne defence to open the scoring for Herentals inside just 10 minutes.
From then, it was their show through and through with their guests even failing to get a single shot on target.
They were fortunate to see off the first half with that respectable score line and the Saul Chaminuka boys looked to have been revitalised during the break.
But they never troubled Herentals until Chikosi’s moment of madness gifted the Harare team a penalty which Chimbetu rolled home.
