FIVE hundred athletes took part in the Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon held in Norton yesterday.
The event, which seeks to celebrate the late Tuku’s legacy, continues to attract hordes of fitness enthusiasts with each passing year.
Event coordinator, Evonne Mudzingwa, of Eve’s Wellness Event Management, described this year’s edition as a success.
“We are pleased with the turnout we received this year. Five hundred people took part in the event while others were turned away when we realized that it was sold out last week.
“Several teams came here including the team from Kadoma who wanted to see how we are organising these events.
“The event was meant to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Oliver Mtukudzi who died five years ago,” she said.
Mudzingwa said they were now strategising for the 2025 edition.
“Our wish is to have many corporations taking part in the event and we hope that next year’s edition will be a bit different from this one.
“We want to make it bigger as we continue to celebrate Tuku’s legacy.
“Tuku was a great man and we will do everything in our power to commemorate his legacy and life,” she said.
Management at Pakare Paye was impressed by the huge turnout that graced the event.
“We can’t thank our fans enough as we appreciate the genuine love they are showing us with each edition.
“This year’s edition was quite a huge success considering the turnout we had here. People showed our late father great love and it’s clear they still miss him.
“It’s hard to imagine that it is now five years without him and we are happy that we have managed to maintain the standards he set for us,” said Pakare Paye administrator, Faith Kadzura.
Several activities including a live band were held after the race.
Three races took place yesterday with some participating in the 21-km race.
Others took part in the 10km and five km races.
Several participants took part in the 10km race in memory of Tuku.
Tuku died on January 23 2019 aged 66.
After his death, several festivities are held each year as a way of remembering the late national hero and music icon.
