A Chitungwiza woman on Thursday delivered a bouncing baby boy weighing 5,35 kg at South Medical Hospital, breaking the health institution’s record for the second time.
Mrs Julia Chirau (31) delivered a baby boy weighing 5,65 kg in March 2012.
Both Thursday and March 2012 deliveries were normal.
In an interview at South Medical Hospital yesterday, Mrs Chirau could not hide her joy.
Her husband Mr Peter Chirau, also said their babies were making history at the health institution.
“We are so happy to once again break the hospital record. Our babies are making history on their birthdays.”
Mrs Chirau’s first born, a girl, almost broke the record again after weighing 4,430kg at birth.
Mrs Chirau said there was no secret behind giving birth to such huge babies.
She said sadza dominated her diet.
She revealed that no one from their families had ever had such huge bouncing babies.
The other baby Anotidaishe (three), looked like a five-year-old boy.
Sister Margaret Tafadzwa from the maternity ward at the hospital, said that normally women who delivered big babies were diabetic. However, Mrs Chirau who weighs 140kg and is 1,7m tall, was not diabetic.
“We have tested her and the baby, our tests indicate that they are not diabetic,” said Sister Tafadzwa.
It is indicated that normally the birth weight of a baby is 2,5kg to 3,5kg; however, there are a few cases in which babies are born weighing between 4 and 5 kg.”
