SIX Tsholotsho villagers from Shaba area died in an accident in Botswana after their vehicle veered off the road and overturned while overtaking. The driver of the vehicle was allegedly speeding, resulting in him failing to control the car.
The councillor for the area, Patrick Ngwenya, confirmed the accident yesterday.
The accident, that happened two weeks ago, came three months after 11 people from Tsholotsho perished in a road traffic accident in Botswana.
Clr Ngwenya said the six were buried on Sunday at their respective areas in Tsholotsho a week after they died.
“We’re shocked with the increasing number of our children who are perishing in Botswana. We were still mourning the 11 who perished in January and now we lose another six to road carnage. It’s terrible,” Clr Ngwenya said.
He said the bodies of the six arrived in the country on Thursday and were kept for a post mortem at a hospital mortuary in Bulawayo.
Ngwenya said the community had to help with burial expenses to the family of the six.
He said as Tsholotsho leaders they have resolved to visit South Africa and Botswana to raise awareness to locals living in both countries on road safety.
Most of the people from Tsholotsho reside in Alexandra in South Africa.
Matabeleland North Acting Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Mandlenkosi Ndlovu yesterday said they did not receive a report of the accident.
