SIXTY aspiring cricketers have registered for the final three-day holiday coaching clinic that starts today and ends on Friday at the Heath Streak Multi-Sport Academy in Bulawayo.Cricket legend Streak will lead a competitive team of coaches which has ex-Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise’ Logan Cup winning captain Gavin Ewing, spin bowler John Nyumbu, national cricket women’s team player Tasmeen Granger and developmental coaches Chris and Trevor Phiri.

“We have been having some private sessions as we were working on the facility but to cap the schools’ holiday we have decided to have a three-day clinic and the response has been overwhelming.

“Already 60 kids have registered and this is a good number which also gives us an insight as to what to expect when we hold a similar exercise during the August school holidays. For this coaching clinic each coach will have 10 pupils,” Ewing said.

The Heath Streak Multi-Sport Academy is at McDonald Club along Fourth Avenue Extension.

It has undergone a major facelift to meet the celebrated former national team captain’s vision and dream of establishing a world class multi-sports facility in Bulawayo that identifies and nurtures talent.

Upon completion, the facility which is modelled along the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, will have a gym, two cricket grounds, a 25m swimming pool and an indoor sports centre that will be used for hockey and five-a-side soccer.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa will officially launch the Academy on May 25.

Sportspersons, schools representatives, corporate representatives and other invited guests are expected to attend the official opening of  the academy according to the Joseph Rego who is the academy’s chief executive officer.

The event will also mark the beginning of the annually sponsored “Heath Streak Academy T20 Cricket League”. The league will seek to identify and groom talent that will one day be the country’s cricket future and help Zimbabwe regain its past glory.

On the day of the launch, there will be an exhibit game that will see Streak playing for a school side with a prominent international cricketer whose name is kept under wraps playing for the opposing team.
