60kg mbanje recovered in fowl run

TWO people were arrested in Chitungwiza on Wednesday and police recovered 60kg of mbanje worth over $6,000 hidden in a fowl  run.
The two, a man and a woman, were arrested following a tip off from members of the public.Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the arrests.

“The mbanje was recovered at a house in Manyame Park where the woman resides,” he said.

He said acting on a tip off police reacted leading to the arrest of the woman.

She then implicated the man who lives in St Marys as the owner of the mbanje.

The man was arrested and the two are still assisting with investigations.

Insp Chibanda said the police would not hesitate to arrest any offenders and warned those still dealing in mbanje that they will soon be brought to book.

In March this year an Epworth woman was jailed for two years and eight months after she was convicted of possessing 21kg of mbanje worth over $2,000.

In January last year, police in Harare intercepted a Malawi-registered truck carrying about 3,700kg of mbanje worth thousands of United States dollars.

The truck driver was arrested while his accomplices who were travelling in a locally registered commuter omnibus and a taxi fled.
