More than 680 000 learners have registered to sit public examinations this year, which is significantly higher than the 650 000 who sat the exams last year, the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) has confirmed.
Statistics obtained from the public examinations body show that this year 358 290 pupils have registered to sit Grade 7 exams, up from 325 573 candidates last year.
Zimsec has registered 291 591 candidates for Ordinary Level exams, an increase from 249 914 who registered last year.
The number of Advanced Level candidates, however, dropped marginally from 49 128 to 37 518.
Zimsec spokesperson Ms Nicky Dhlamini said: “The Zimsec timetable has returned to the normal dates, which prevailed before the Covid-19 pandemic-induced disruptions.
“Grade Seven examinations started on September 26 and there are no reports of any disruptions at the moment.”
She said all stakeholders were on high alert to safeguard the integrity of the examinations.
Zimbabwe National Association of School Heads secretary-general Mr Munyaradzi Majoni said the increase in exam candidates was testament to public confidence in the country’s education system.
Grade Seven exams commenced on Monday last week and will end on October 10. Advanced and Ordinary Level exams, which started on September 19, will conclude on November 5 and 29, respectively.
