At least 69 firearms were surrendered to the police last month after members of the public with unregistered firearms and
ammunition were granted an amnesty to voluntarily surrender them by September 30 without facing any criminal charges
.
Cases of abuse of unregistered firearms have been on the rise, with the owners committing heinous crimes such as murder.
To combat the scourge, President Mnangagwa granted an amnesty in line with Article 12 of the SADC Protocol on the control of
firearms, ammunition, and related materials.
In a statement, national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the developments.
“Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police press statements released on September 2 and September 13, 2024
regarding the 2024 Firearms Amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition,” he said
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the public that the amnesty period which began on September 1 ended on September
30, 2024.
“During the period, 69 firearms were voluntarily surrendered to the police throughout the country.
“The police extends its gratitude to the public for their cooperation and encourages continued support in the police’s efforts to
fight crime and ensure public safety.”
A total of 580 unregistered firearms were also handed over to the police during the first amnesty.
Commissioner Nyathi said a nationwide operation targeting individuals and companies possessing illegal firearms and
ammunition will soon be launched.
“The operation will aim to address the public and safety concerns on the abuse of firearms in criminal acts such as armed
robbery, murder, and other cases,” he said.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores members of the public to report individuals or companies suspected to have illegal
firearms on the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631, WhatsApp 0712 800197 or report at the nearest police
station.”
