The Harare City Council, which is battling to collect refuse around the city, is planning to set up waste transfer stations that will
shorten the distance covered by its refuse collection vehicles.
Ward 37 Councillor Richard Pamire told Kuwadzana 4 residents over the weekend that the setting up of waste transfer stations
is being done under the city’s decentralisation drive.
“When this becomes operational, we will look for a central area for people to come and dump their waste there,” he said.
“Our tractors will then collect refuse from that central point and take it to the dump site. This will assist us a lot because we will
save fuel and time. We will have a dedicated car for refuse collection in each ward.”
Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr Stanely Gama said the initiative will be implemented soon.
“Residents will drop refuse at collection points close to their areas and council will collect using 30-tonne trucks and take it to
Pomona.
“This will be implemented soon. Our refuse collection will continue to improve,” he said.
However, residents said if the local authority does not consistently collect the refuse from the waste transfer stations, this could
become a serious health hazard.
