Mazhindu’s condition was reported to be unstable yesterday as he was still admitted to hospital.
Fortune Bonde (28) and his brother Terence (25) of 4071 Unit D are jointly charged with five others, Farai Madotsa (32), Tafadzwa Chitenhewere (22), Tongai Manyika (35),Kudakwashe Chinheya (22) and Tapiwa Madzunga (35). The five appeared before a Chitungziwa magistrate yesterday facing charges of assault related to political violence.
They were not asked to plead to the charges when they appeared before magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo and were remanded in custody to April 29.
Mr Murendo asked them to seek bail at the High Court after prosecutor Mr Lovet Muringwa said the case was serious since it was politically motivated violence.
He said that some of the evidence indicated that the seven belonged to a political party and that cases of political violence threatened political stability in the country.
Mr Muringwa said that all parties in the inclusive Government had declared zero tolerance towards political violence, yet the seven had the guts to commit the crime.
It is alleged that they severely assaulted him using various weapons and then sprayed him in the eye with an unknown substance until he became unconscious.
The MDC-T supporters undressed Mazhindu of his party’s regalia and dressed him in an ordinary T-shirt belonging to Terence.
After committing the act, the MDC-T supporters left the place and a report was made to the police leading to their arrest.
