730 000 register to vote in the Midlands

Patrick Chitumba Midlands Bureau Chief
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has registered 727 448 voters in the Midlands province to date as the province targets 800 000 voters, zanu-pf provincial chairperson Engineer Daniel Mackenzie Ncube has said.

In an interview yesterday, Eng Ncube said of the 727 748 registered voters 333 905 are male.

“We are encouraged by this high figure as we believe that we are doing fairly better than other provinces. We hope more voters register because as Midlands province, we are targeting 800 000 voters,” he said.

Eng Ncube said following the successful provincial and district launch of the election campaign, winning candidates for council and parliamentary elections were on the ground campaigning for President Mnangagwa and the ruling party.

“Campaigning by candidates has been going on smoothly across the province since the official launch of the election campaign.

“We are confident of giving our President a huge victory in this province. Every vote counts and that’s why we want more people to vote,” he said.

Of the 29 candidates to represent the constituencies in Midlands province, only 11 were re-elected from the last elections with the rest falling by the way side following the successful primary elections.

zanu-pf winning candidates have also gone under orientation on party ideology and operations by a trainer from the Herbert Chitepo Ideological College. The party resolved that no person will contest in this year’s elections on its ticket without having received training from the college.

At the centre of the Chitepo Ideological School is the need to identify and embrace the ruling party’s foundational ideology which is rooted in socialism with Zimbabwean characteristics.

According to data released by ZEC 96 percent of the voters are between the ages of 20 and 44 age group while the rest are from 45 to over 90 years age group.
