8 get French scholarships

Senior Writer
Eight Zimbabwean students have received scholarships from a Franco-Zimbabwe research platform to undertake their MPhil and PhD studies on conservation and sustainable development in France. The students were presented with the scholarships recently by the French Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Laurent Delahousse under a bilateral research partnership that brings together the University of Zimbabwe and the National University of Science and Technology, and two French research organisations – Cirad and Cnrs.

“We want Zimbabwean students to have an opportunity to further their studies by researching on human and wildlife issues affecting communities living close to conservation parks,” Mr Delahousse said.

“The approach is to use science to tackle some of the problems facing the country on the ecological front.”

The eight were Tendai Nekatambe, Tatenda Petros, Clarice Mudzengi, Masimba Ndengu, Gregory Dowo, Norman Mukarati, Musa Tivapasi and Tawanda Tarakini.

Since its inception in 2007, the platform has contributed immensely to sustainable development, conservation and improved rural livelihoods in Southern Africa through the development of research frameworks that tackle challenges related to production activities by communities on the periphery of conservation areas.

The platform involves an international multidisciplinary team of 50 senior researchers, academics and post-graduate students from a wide range of disciplines, including social sciences, agronomy, ecology, geography and veterinary science.
