An eight-year-old boy from Maphisa drowned while swimming in a river on Tuesday.
Matabeleleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Seargent Stanford Mguni confirmed the incident which happened 100m downstream from Mwene Bridge on the Maphisa-Kezi Road.
He said the boy was in the company of his 11-year-old brother when he went to swim in the river.
“I can confirm that we recorded a sudden death by drowning case which occurred 100m downstream from Mwene Bridge on the Maphisa-Kezi Road.
An eight-year-old boy drowned in Mwene River while swimming in the company of his 11-year-old brother.
The boy went to the deep part of the river where he drowned,” said Sgt Mguni.
He said after realising that his brother was motionless, the 11-year-old alerted a man who was passing by.
“The man retrieved the boy from the river after which family members were called to the scene.
Investigations are still ongoing,” said Sgt Mguni.
He urged parents and guardians to closely monitor minors and not allow them to get into water bodies.
He also advised parents and guardians to guard against the drowning of babies and toddlers in buckets and dishes filled with water.– @Yolisswa.
