THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) says about 80 bags containing sawdust and organic matter were dumped near Amakhosi Service Station along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road.

EMA Bulawayo Provincial Environmental Education and Publicity Officer Ms Kayleen Dube said they had engaged the Bulawayo City Council to help clear the dump.

“An estimate of 80 bags of sawdust — organic matter — was found disposed of on site. The dumping is alleged to have been done during the night and no witnesses saw the vehicle disposing of this material.

“It is unlawful to dispose of any form of waste in such a manner as to cause pollution to the environment in any undesignated dumping area,” said Ms Dube.

The area where the waste was dumped is not far from residential houses in Northend suburb and Baines Infant Primary School, posing a risk had the substance been harmful.

“The local authority has been engaged for clearance of the waste,” said Ms Dube.
