CLOSE to 800 people will take part in the various races on offer at this year’s Old Mutual Nkulumane Half Marathon set for today.
Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman Emanuel Mpofu said registration for the competition which was done online had attracted around 750 athletes from all categories.
Winners of this year’s event in the 21km open for both men as well as women categories will walk away with $1 000. Their next three runners-up to cross the line will each get $800, $600, $450, plus $300 according to their order of merit.
In addition to these there are attractive prizes for the 10km road race, veteran men, women, masters men, women including the wheelchair category.
Juniors will also be given a platform to show case their running skills over 10km in which the fastest from all groups will each collect $200 leaving their runners-up to receive $150 and $100 respectively.
Mpofu expressed his satisfaction towards the event and declared readiness to hold the competition.
“The event is being held by Old Mutual as part of their marketing strategy while Bab is going to provide the technical support. We are there to make sure that everything goes according to The International Association of Athletics Federations rules as well as National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe regulations,” said Mpofu.
The annual meeting is part of the company’s social corporate responsibility programme and it started as a fun run but has been upgraded to also cater for competitive athletes.
