836 trained in solar installation, maintenance

The national requirement to contribute to the total electrification of all households in Zimbabwe has led Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) to partner with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) to train its employees in solar installation and maintenance, said Group Financial Controller Mr Eliab Chikwenhere.

Mr Chikwenhere said that yesterday while giving out certificates to those who had finished their course in solar pv installation and maintenance in Harare.

“The Total Electrification Programme is dedicated to build capacity and advance knowledge in the field of renewable energy, particularly solar, to contribute to the total electrification of all households in Zimbabwe and was initiated in response to the national energy requirement, and the mantra of His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa, of living no place and no one behind.

“The Total Electrification Programme stands as a testament to ZESA’s vision and mission, aligning seamlessly with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As we pursue the four pillars of National Development Strategy (NDS)1 macroeconomic stability, financial re-engagement, inclusive growth, and governance, with a focus on social development — we recognize that expansion in critical areas, such as the energy sector, is pivotal to achieving economic growth.”

Mr Chikwenhere said the Second Republic introduced a performance based culture and vowed to invest more in educational institutions, especially in the era we are in of trying to eradicate carbon emissions and use renewable energy.

“By providing training in renewable energy, we directly contribute to the national development goal of sustainable access to energy for all by 2030, and strengthen our commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly power solutions,” he said.

He was happy with the huge turn out of employees who participated in this initiative introduced by the government.

“A total of 836 individuals have been trained to date, and today, we celebrate the achievements of approximately 600 graduates in Northern Region, Eastern Region and Harare Region,” he said.

“These numbers represent not just individuals trained but ambassadors of sustainable energy principles, ready to contribute to Zimbabwe’s energy transformation which will lead us to an upper middle-class economy by 2030.”

One of the participants, Netsai Berejena, was happy with the certificate and the experience she got during the learning period.

“I am happy with this certificate and the knowledge I got and I would love to give back to my company and also to my country and achieve their developmental goals and work towards the implementation of renewable energy,” she said.

Donald Dube, Brian Makoshori, Moleen Manyika and Rachel Gwerengwe were among those who were awarded certificates and expressed their joy.
