84pc Arsenal fans back Wenger to lead club to glory

Arsene Wenger has received a major confidence-booster heading into the new Premier League season, with 84 percent of Arsenal fans still believing he is the right man to lead the club.

Wenger has already guided the Gunners to an impressive pre-season treble over the past month, adding the Premier League Asia Trophy, Emirates Cup and Community Shield to the FA Cup won last May.

And ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against West Ham at the Emirates on Sunday, the majority of the Gunners faithful have given their seal of approval to Wenger remaining in charge.

In a survey seen by the Telegraph, the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust polled 700 of its members, with 84 percent backing the Frenchman to remain as manager — a huge swing in popularity from only 17 percent voicing their satisfaction with the club’s performances in 2013.

Two FA Cup successes and the expensive recruits of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have contributed to Wenger’s resurgence in the eyes of Arsenal supporters in the last two years.

The club’s 1-0 victory in the Community Shield against champions Chelsea on Sunday has only added to the growing belief among Wenger supporters that this could be the year Arsenal lift the Premier League title for the first time since 2004.

Wenger has been ruthless in making Petr Cech his one summer signing thus far, displacing David Ospina as his first-choice goalkeeper while allowing Wojciech Szczesny to join Roma on loan.

Despite the lack of frenzied transfer activity, the show of support for Wenger heading into his 20th campaign as Arsenal manager is further indication that progress is being made, and that the 65-year-old is putting the final pieces to a title-winning force in place. — SportsMail.
