At least nine inmates escaped from prisons in Mashonaland West Province in 2017, amid calls for vigilance by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS). Of the escapees, five were re-arrested while four are still at large. Hurungwe Prison had five inmates who escaped during the course of the year, while three escaped from Kadoma Prison and one from Chinhoyi Prison.

Speaking at an end of year party at Chinhoyi Caves Hotel on Friday evening, Officer Commanding Prisons in Mashonaland West, Senior Assistant Commissioner George Denya said: “Inmates usually want to join their fellow friends outside and they try all tricks to go out unlawfully, therefore, go and alert your subordinates to be more careful whenever they are on duty.

“We want zero tolerance to the escape of inmates.”
