Police have arrested at least 90 gold panners for conducting various illegal mining activities along Mutare River.
The arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of various mining equipment and solar panels.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects were arrested following a crackdown to flush out all illegal mining activities in the country.
“On July 9 and 12, 2024, police officers were deployed on an operation to flush out illegal gold mining activities along Mutare River, Penhalonga. They arrested 90 suspects for various illegal mining activities,” he said.
“The arrest led to the recovery of an assortment of mining equipment, including wheelbarrows, shovels, submersible pumps, hammer mills, water pumps, and solar panels.”
