A date with media veterans

LEARNERS from Mother Touch Group of Schools in Tynwald South, Harare, recently had a rare opportunity of touring Zimpapers.

They joined the growing list of learners from other educational institutions who have already done so. The tours are aimed at ensuring they gain an appreciation of the operations of Zimbabwe’s largest integrated media organisation.

The group – which comprised 19 pupils and two teachers – had the chance of experiencing, first-hand, how the Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN), The Herald and The Sunday Mail function. The tour was part of the Zimpapers Junior Media Club’s initiative, a corporate social responsibility project meant to equip students with media skills.

ZTN head of output and veteran broadcaster Ishmael Ndlovu gave a background of the television station and explained its operations, before the learners were taken on a tour of the studios. The learners also went to the control room, where they learnt what happens in this chamber.

During the tour, the learners had the opportunity to ask questions and also point out aspects of television broadcasting that appealed to them.

Tavonga Gwadanwa said he was excited by the big cameras he saw, while Junior Musora was impressed by the television studio setup.

From the ZTN studios, the students went to The Herald newsroom, where they were welcomed by the editor, Hatred Zenenga; managing editor Ruth Butaumocho and news editor Farai Dzirutwe.

They expressed keenness to become journalists in the future after The Herald editor asked if any one of them was contemplating joining the profession.

“If you work hard and get good grades, you can become future journalists,” said Zenenga.

The learners also visited The Sunday Mail newsroom.
