His journey from illegal diamond mining to performing in the biggest MMA arena is not just a story about overcoming hardships but also about the strength of the human spirit.
From the depths of the diamond mines
Temba’s childhood was far from ideal. At the age of 13, he was left without parents and had to survive on his own. In search of a livelihood, young Gorimbo found himself in the diamond fields of Marange. These places are not only known for gemstones but also for criminal activity. “There’s death, there’s gangsters,” Temba recalls. He admits that he used to steal and smuggle diamonds, considering it the norm in those conditions. The danger was not only from criminal gangs but also from the police and even guard dogs, whose bite marks are still visible on his body.
Path to the great sport
Fate smiled on Temba at the age of 17 when he found a 12-carat diamond. This allowed him to move to South Africa in the hope of a better life. But even here, trials awaited him: deportation, re-entry illegally and even a two-week detention as a hostage. It was in South Africa that Gorimbo discovered MMA after watching the movie “Never Give Up.” Despite the fact that the cost of a month’s training exceeded his daily wage, Temba didn’t back down. “It was very difficult, but I had to make that sacrifice because I really wanted to become an MMA fighter,” he says.
After success in South Africa’s Extreme Fighting Championship promotion, Gorimbo got his chance in the UFC. His debut in February 2023 turned out to be a loss, and before his second fight, he had only $7.49 in his bank account. “I had the flu, but I couldn’t turn down the fight because I needed the money – I was broke,” the fighter recalled. Despite the illness, Temba emerged victorious.
Since then, the fighter’s career has been going strong, and he’s been rapidly gaining popularity for months. Today, Temba is not only aiming for a UFC championship belt, but he’s also actively helping his homeland. He is building a library in Zimbabwe and inspiring African children. “If you choose a path and work hard, you can achieve anything,” the fighter believes.
Lessons in resilience from a diamond fighter
Temba Gorimbo’s story is not just about going from illegal diamond mining to fame in the UFC. It’s a lesson in how a man can turn life’s darkest pages into a source of strength. From running from dogs in the diamond fields to getting a house from a Hollywood star, each stage has moulded an incredible resilience in him.
Gorimbo proves that true diamonds are not stones but people capable of shining even after being cut by the harshest of circumstances. His story is a reminder that in life, as in the octagon, victory often goes not to the strongest but to the most persistent. Another such victory was recently won by the fighter. And while Temba continues his journey to the top of the UFC, he has already won the most important fight of all – the fight for the right to live a decent life and inspire others.
