A ’keeper on the rise

Bruce Chikuni

HERENTALS goalkeeper, Takudzwa Chikosi, has had a season to remember.

The 19-year-old has amassed 14 clean sheets.

He appears to have a knack of guessing the right way to deny opponents from the penalty spot.

He has saved four penalties this season.

His brilliance is probably the reason Herentals made it to the Chibuku Super Cup final for the first time in the competition’s history.

Chikosi is just three clean sheets behind Dynamos goalminder, Taimon Mvula, and Nelson Chadya of Ngezi Platinum Stars, in the Golden Glove race.

He is also a contender for the Castle Lager Premiership Rookie of the Year accolade.

The others are Whawha forward Jayden Bakare and FC Platinum’s Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.

“I can say I’m really impressed with what I have achieved in my first season,” said Chikosi.

“But, my target was to win the league’s Golden Glove award.”

He can still win the Chibuku Super Cup best goalie award, should they get the better of Bulawayo Chiefs in the final on November 19, at Barbourfields.

He hailed the team’s goalkeepers’ coach, Tsungirai Mudzamiri, for his rise.

“Coach Mudzamiri has helped me a lot and I really owe my progress to him.

“My secret is that I am ambitious, so I train hard and am always praying to God for strength.

“We have a good chance to finish the season in the top six, but we need to get a positive result against Dynamos and I believe it’s possible.”

The two sides meet at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
