RELEGATION-THREATENED Kwekwe United’s president Phil Makekera is relinquishing a significant portion of his shares in the club and distributing them freely to the local community and business stakeholders.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at a venue in Harare, where Makekera, flanked by club chief executive, Bridget Mudhosi.

“It has been public knowledge that Kwekwe United has been owned by me,” said Makekera.

“But today, I am announcing that I have decided to relinquish my shares within the club, freely, to the Kwekwe community and the business community.”

The shares will be distributed in two main categories, that is the community and the businesspeople.

“The community is represented by MP Jona Nyevera (Silobela constituency) and Vongaishe Mupereri (Mbizo constituency), these shares ensure that local supporters have a direct stake in the club’s future.”

The business community is led by Solomon Matsa and this allocation opens opportunities for local and international investors to buy into the club’s vision.

Makekera said that while he retains some shares, the majority will now be in the hands of the people.

“This is no longer a one-man project. It is now a community-driven initiative.”

For years, Makekera had been the primary financier of Kwekwe United, bankrolling operations and steering the club through both triumphs and challenges.

However, he acknowledged that true sustainability could only come through collective ownership.

“The people of Kwekwe have always rallied behind this team,” he said.

“Now, they will have a say in its direction. This gives them a sense of belonging, because it is their club.”

Despite the shift in ownership, Makekera confirmed that the current leadership structure remains intact, for now.

He will continue serving as club president, supported by vice presidents Solomon Matsa (Commercial), Jona Nyevera (Community), and Lamek Tarupira (Marketing), alongside CEO Bridget Mudhosi.

However, with shares now available for public purchase, the door is open for new investors and stakeholders to influence the club’s trajectory.

“Anyone who loves football, whether in Kwekwe, the Midlands, or beyond can now be part of this journey,” added club Mudhosi.

Ahead of the new era, Makekera said:

“This is not just about football.  It’s about unity, pride, and giving back to the people who have stood by us. Together, we can take Kwekwe United to new heights.”
