A ‘redhead’ emoji might finally be on the way

One of the biggest problems for Irish emoji lovers may be about to be eliminated. Reports in the US suggest that at the meeting of the Unicode Committee at Apple HQ next week, a proposal for a red-head emoji will be discussed. The Unicode Committee are the group who decide what does and doesn’t make the cut for emojis and after a campaign for gingers to be included, it looks like they are finally about to debate the topic.

The proposal contains plans to either create a stand-alone ‘person with red-hair’ emoji or to add a red-hair option to many of the existing characters.

The full proposal document goes through the huge range of options up for discussion but there is a still a doubt it will get the nod.

Globally, only one to two per cent of the population has red hair, so despite all the demand from this part of the world (where the number is closer to 10 per cent) it is far from a shoo-in.

And with the latest update already being worked on, the earliest we could see a ginger emoji would be 2018.

In short, it might be a while before red gets the green light. — Sundayworld
