Lights, camera, action. Whenever you hear such words, it’s obvious there’s a movie in the making. Earlier this year, nine-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis was voted best young actress for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” at the 18th Annual Critics’’ Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica, Calif. We are glad, teenagers are making it on the big screen.
Move over Ariel Winter, Debby Ryan, Joey King, Cameroon Boyce, Rendaya among others who are causing a stir in Hollywood. Zollywood is here to stay and, guess what, teens are penetrating the movie industry.
Sixteen-year-old Lloyd Chikoho was just an ordinary boy, trying his best in school and keeping up with the latest trends in his world.
He had his hopes for the future, but never in his wildest dreams did he ever dream of one day seeing his face on the silver screen or in the newspaper.
“I am very happy to see you Cool Lifestyle guys, interviewing me. We thought it is only for the Hararians and it was my dream to be in the newspaper,” he said.
Luckily today he is set to be famous, for a while at least.
According to the shy teenager who has ventured into acting, he went for auditions at the “Dust and Fortunes” movie some months ago.
“I was picked up at an audition after pipping several other teen hopefuls who were hoping to take the part of George in the movie ‘Dust and Fortunes’. I think it is my courage and determination that landed me that role.”
In the movie, George is the son of Wakona, a role played by Dynamos Football Club star Desmond Maringwa. Wakona is a former soccer player who hung up his boots after an injury.
The Domboshava-based teenager said the sky was the limit for him.
“I want to prove to the world that, if given a chance, teenagers can rule the world. We can change the face of the movie industry because we are young, talented and can adapt to any situations,” he said.
He said it is not your background that can change your lifestyle but vision and goals.
“If you set your goals well and chase your dream you end up somewhere else. I am here to stay and forget about Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, but let’s all support young talent,” he said.
However, at the time of the shoot, Lloyd was a student at Zimbiru Secondary School.
In the movie George is bothering his father, asking him why he gave up football and nagging to play the game with him. Wakona then reveals that he saved his boots so that one day he could pass them on to his son.
The plot of the movie follows the dreams of several people as the main character sets out to turn his own visions into reality.
George is one of the characters who benefit as his own aspirations also come to pass. According to the producers, it is the first full- length movie to be produced by an academic institution in a combined effort between students and lecturers.
