His performances at the school fun days left lasting impressions on people of all ages. For that reason, Aay Jay has done wonders in a trail-blazing career spanning more than half a decade.
This was a result of his zeal for music which dates back to the 1990s. Like most musicians, Aay Jay discovered his love for music while at primary school at Kuwadzana performing at talent shows.
Besides his music, Aay Jay is also a skilful dancer, who has proved his prowess in many dancing competitions.
“I developed an interest in music at a tender age of nine whilst doing my primary level at Kuwadzana 3 where I would exhibit my talent in music and dancing.
“To my classmates and friends, it was a marvel to watch and would envy my skills and from then till now have never looked back,” he said.
He clinched a recording contract with a record label “AGL” in 2008 when he was still doing his Advanced Levels.
Like everyone else, the talented teenager had a vision to become well-known medical practitioner in the country if not the world.
But as fate would have it, his dreams were shattered after failing to come up with flying colours at school.
“My passion was to become a doctor after completing my studies at university level, but it became a pipedream after I failed to make it at my Advanced Levels due to lack of concentration on school work while pursuing music.
“However, I later on found solace in music after clinching a recording contract under AGL where I recorded my first single titled ‘Mwana Akanaka’. I did it with my five friends ‘Dangerous 5 Crew’ and in the song I was praising a girl,” he said with a chuckle.
His failure to further his studies did not deter him as he switched his focus and decided to venture into dancing and music full-times. During this time, he did three mix tapes under the name “King Austin” and his passion for music forced him to the microphone.
Tracks such as “My God is Real”, “I Got Money in the Bank” and “Ndichiri Mudiki” saw him attracting a large fan base especially from his neighbourhood with people jostling to listen to them. Thereafter, the determined youth went to do more enticing dances and dropping watertight lyrics that many found irresistible.
His dexterity on stage saw him taking part in a dancing competition held at 7Arts Theatre in 2010 where he came second.
“This became the most memorable event in my life since I was awarded some prize money and holiday tickets to Bulawayo,” he pointed out.
Hailing from the western suburb of Crowbrough North, Aay Jay is proving to be the force to reckon with in the dancehall circles.
Currently, Aay Jay is riding high with his recently released 17-track dancehall album titled “Live Mi Life”.
The album is a social commentary, urging people to work hard and desist from engaging in evil deeds.
“Live Mi Life’, loosely translated, and means I am living my life to the fullest. But most importantly, people should desist from doing evil things all because of money,” he said.
The album opens with the track, “Burn Illuminatti”, in which he is encouraging people to shun “Illuminatti” a way of worshipping the devil. Some of the tracks worth listening to include “Zino Irema”, “Gyal Am Sorry”, “Mummy You Strong,” among others.
Only time will tell and given the platform, Aay Jay promises a brighter future ahead of him and become the country’s finest in dancehall music.
