AS is always the case with the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), controversy is never far away.
The nominations, which were released last week, have sparked excitement and debate among music fans across the country.
Predictably, they have also sparked controversy.
One major question is why Winky D’s song “Siya” was not included in the Outstanding Song category, despite its popularity.
The song won the same award at the Radio Zimbabwe awards.
There have also been questions in the Promoter of the Year category.
Some feel Chipaz Promotions and the organisers of Doek & Slay dominated the scene last year and should have been nominated ahead of Fiesta Fiesta Zimbabwe.
Last year, Chipaz held successful events such as Tete ATete, Cup Clash and many others.
“Where is Doek and Slay pama promoter? Winky D — Siya pa Song of the Year?
“Doek and Slay and Chipaz Promotion shows were the must attended shows last yet there are not even nominated in any category, please be serious.
“Song of the year on national radio haipo. What criteria is used to choose these things?”
Predictions suggest a tight race for Song of the Year between Jah Prayzah’s ‘‘Ruzhowa,’’ Nutty O’s ‘‘Too Much’’ and Nisha Ts’ ‘‘Admire Kadembo.’’
Some are favouring Jah Prayzah for his song writing prowess and others are tipping Nutty O for his amazing success.
Looking at the numbers, the race is very tight.
‘‘Ruzhowa’’ has reached 6.5 million views in nine months.
‘‘Too Much’’ has gathered 5.1 million views in just six months, showing tremendous growth within a short period.
‘‘Admire Kadembo’’ has earned 6.4 million views in 11 months, proving its steady popularity.
All three songs were major anthems last year.
They were played at parties, on radio stations, at weddings and on social media.
Because of this, many people say it will not be easy for the judges to choose a winner.
There are some who feel Nutty O could take it due to the song’s strong street appeal and fast rise.
Nisha Ts is also seen as a serious contender, representing the new generation of artists making a big impact.
In the Outstanding Social Media Skits category, many believe Comic Elder is the favourite.
He is nominated alongside Tokoloshi and Thugga Thugga, but fans say Comic Elder had a big year online and must walk away with the award.
The People’s Choice Award is also creating excitement.
There is some backlash as to why Ritz was nominated in the same category as heavyweights Jah Prayzah and Winky D.
The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) unveiled the nominees for the 24th edition of the NAMA last week.
Set for February 28 at the Harare International Conference Centre, the ceremony will run under the theme “Fearless Creativity.”
It promises a vibrant celebration of the country’s artistic excellence, blending seasoned icons with emerging voices.
There was a record of over 1 117 submissions, covering works produced between December 1, 2024, and November 30, last year.
Music lovers can expect an electrifying showcase across genres with gospel music being represented by Minister Ellard, Sharon Cherayi and Vabati VaJehova.
Dancehall heavyweights Freeman, BaShupi and Junior Spragga will also inject high-energy performances.
