Glamis Stadium on Easter Saturday.
The 21-year-old chubby singer blew away the chance to make his debut appearance in the capital Harare a memorable one after he exchanged the mike for the turntables.
The act was disappointing, to say the least, as Kingston turned himself into a pathetic deejay. Frankly speaking, there was no magic in his act.
He even told his fans to ignore whatever they read in the newspapers and used unprintable words.
“You know what? I love Zimbabwe and all my fans . . . don’t believe what you read in the newspapers I am one cool (expletives deleted) !!!!” he said.
Besides his poor showing some of the revellers were pretty annoyed by Kingston’s sagging jeans which showed his underpants throughout the performance.
“Obviously, the organisers had done their homework in the build-up to the show as evidenced by the stage work and the whole set-up.
“The VIPs got value for their money but Kingston’s gig was like any other show. There was nothing outstanding,” Charleen Mutezo said.
Another reveller said people should know that Kingston is young and that he appeals more to the ages between five years to about 20.
“You can’t blame this guy (Kingston); he is still a boy and whatever you saw on stage that’s him,” Gerald Kasirori said.
“I should have known that the guy cannot perform; he seems to be exhausted. Perhaps the deejaying part was to allow him to take a breather. However, I think the show was good,” he said.
But one thing about Kingston was that he enjoyed himself and he had a great time on stage although he used backtracks on all of his hits such as “Face Drop”, “Me Love”, “Letting Go (Dutty Love)” and “Take You There” among others.
Zimbabwean artistes have really come of age and the whole line-up of performers was good.
Winky D aka Di Bigiman’s act was rather lukewarm. Maybe it was because of the low sound output and his play-list did not do justice to the highly expectant crowd.
One thing Di Bigiman should keep in mind is that at such high-profile shows there is no need to slow things down.
He was supposed to churn out hit after hit but he relaxed on the mic such that he performed mostly his new songs which have to do with self-aggrandisement.
It’s well and good to “big himself up” but it gets boring when every song is about how good he is or how he has won this or that.
He should stick to real issues such as “Green Like Mi Garden”, “Musarova Bigiman”, “Vanotaura” and “Bus Di Shot”, “Butsu” and what have you.
The same goes for Stunner (real name Desmond Chideme), who is overdoing his poetry. Of course, he looked blinged up and all but when it came to performance he did a shoddy job.
He played mostly new stuff, which did not endear with the colourful crowd.
His collaboration with Winky D on “Vaudze” was enjoyable while Cindy Munyavi surprised her fans by going international with some reggae flavours.
With two raunchy dancers, Cindy had come prepared for the show and her rendition of Sean Paul “Still In Love” was awesome. She really nailed it.
The duo of Bkay and Kazz was another thriller. The two, who wowed audiences at last year’s Harare International Festival of the Arts, did their thing and boy oh boy the ladies just loved every minute of it.
The Masvingo boys, who are now based in the United Kingdom, have mastered the art of entertainment.
One would confuse them for Americans straight out of Brooklyn with the way they were dressed.
Whatever Sanii Makhalima was doing at the show did not impress anyone except himself.
Sanii seemed as if he has lost some of his nuggets and his act was not the one we wanted to see on stage.
Zeena the Diva, though she is an upstart, did well with her soothing voice. She had great energy and her performance was well received.
High Definition, a leading Harare hip-hop group, was magical to watch.
The dance trio is improving with each performance and some of their electric moves are eye catching.
The concert organiser, C&A Entertainment led by Clint Robinson, showed how proudly Zimbabwean they are by putting up a flawless gig.
The security, the gates and the gig set-up was tip-top and hopefully they will build on this success for their upcoming gig featuring Elephant Man.
The dancehall star is billed to perform at Glamis Stadium on June 24 and fans can’t wait!
