A HARARE man has been dragged to court for allegedly abusing his wife for some time.
The matter came to light when Wadzanai Rwaendepi approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against her husband Leonard Kavemba.
She accused him of emotionally, verbally, psychologically and sexually abusing her. She told the court that Kavemba was in the habit of assaulting and insulting her.
“This man has been abusing me for a while now. He insults me in front of our children and neighbours, calling me a prostitute.
“What he filed in his papers are all false allegations because he wants to tarnish my image,” Rwaendepi said.
She also claimed her husband was in the habit of fabricating lies among family members, neighbours and church mates.
Rwaendepi said the couple had sought police and family intervention several times which has, however, failed to settle the dispute.
“Whenever we get to the police station, he addresses himself as a Colonel, which then hinders the police officers to conduct their job freely.
“The last time, when I got to the police station, he accused me of kidnapping our house maid, the officers asked how I was copping up with him after they had realised he was violent,” she said.
She said allegations that she had kidnapped their maid were only meant to tarnish her image.
“The matter was then dismissed by the police after they carried investigations and they realised he had fabricated all the accusations.
“He also assaults me and when I bit off his finger, it was for self defence your Worship because I was suffocating,” Rwaendepi said.
She said her husband had barred her from going to the United States where she wanted to work for their family.
“I do not know how he got access to my email and he wrote to the board members who later told me I could not qualify despite having been granted the opportunity.
“He also denies me conjugal rights stating that he has a girlfriend who was satisfying him,” she said.
In his defence, Kavemba denied the allegations and claimed his wife was the one who was abandoning him.
“She is doing this because she is communicating with her father’s child and, since he is earning better than me, she wants to leave for that man.
“What pains me is that vakandishandisa ava kuchengeta mwana wavo kubva ane two years,” he said.
Presiding magistrate, Sharon Mashaviram granted the protection order against the husband and ordered him not to abuse, harass or harm his wife.
