Accountant steals $10k

Codelia Mondela, Court Reporter
AN accountant from Bulawayo has been dragged to court for allegedly stealing more than $10 000 remittance money that was meant to be paid to Zimra and NSSA from his former employer.

Chamunorwa Mamoyo (39) allegedly stole $10 125 from Ms Pauline Ann Eglin when he was employed at Froggy Pond School of Learning in the city.

Mamoyo pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft of trust property before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Sthembiso Ncube.

Ms Ncube granted him $300 bail and remanded him to January 9 when he will be provided with a trial date.

Prosecuting, Mr Mclean Ndlovu alleged that Mamoyo stole from Ms Eglin between August 2015 and January 2016.

Mr Ndlovu said Mamoyo’s duties included advising Ms Eglin on Zimra and NSSA returns.

“He filed all payments and kept the books. On August 18 2015, Mamoyo allegedly received $381 and signed for it. He was supposed to forward the money to NSSA as payment,” he said.

“On September 21 the same year, Mamoyo allegedly received $1 444 which he signed for and was supposed to make payments to Zimra and NSSA,” he said.

Mr Ndlovu said the following month he allegedly received $1 443, signed for it but never paid Zimra.

“In November he allegedly received $2 840 for remittance to NSSA and Zimra respectively,” he said.

The court heard that in January last year he was given $2 200 for remittance.

“On January 29, Ms Eglin allegedly gave Mamoyo $2 460 for remittance and he signed an acknowledgment receipt. Ms Eglin was later approached by NSSA enquiring about payments as they claimed they did not receive any payment,” Mr Ndlovu said.

He said Ms Eglin terminated the employment agreement and instigated investigations. — @MondelaC
