RUGBY enthusiasts in Bulawayo are in for a treat with enthralling matches lined up for the third round of the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Archer Clothing Rugby League which is pencilled in for Saturday.
A total of five matches across the three leagues will be played throughout the day at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds. It is the stage where the crème de la crème of local rugby meets.
The league has gotten off to a flying start and exhilarating rugby action promises to keep the fire burning. There will be two Women’s league matches, one Division One encounter, and two Championship clashes to round up the third week of rugby.
Kick starting the day will be women’s matches. The first match of the day will be between Highlanders Women and Panthers Women at 12 pm before Warriors Women entertain Plumtree Queens at 12.30 pm.
Soon after the women’s matches, the only Division One match on the cards pitting Plumtree Buffaloes and Greyhounds will follow, starting at 1 pm. In the Championship division, bottom-placed Bulldogs will be looking to bite above their weight when they face defending champions Matabeleland Warriors in a match scheduled to start at 2.30 pm.
Closing off week three of action will be a clash between last season’s runners-up, and currently second placed Old Miltonians (OMs) against fourth-placed Highlanders. The two teams are just separated by one point on the log standings with OMs on five while Highlanders are on four. The game between OMs and Highlanders on Saturday is scheduled to start at 4pm.
In the previous round of games, Warriors, who won the inaugural league last year, defeated Highlanders 67-7 and claimed the top spot in the log standings with a superior points difference. In the second week also, Panthers also produced a strong performance and thrashed Bulldogs 82-7.
Warriors and OMs have so far played one match apiece. There were no Division One matches in week two of the league, but in the women’s category, Warriors’ ladies whitewashed Highlanders 20-0. With two wins under their belt, Warriors’ ladies are comfortably sitting at the top of the log standings with 10 points, the only team with points on the board in their category. Gate charges for the days are pegged at US$1 for general entry and US$2 for the VIP section.
