LEGENDARY South African actress Leleti Khumalo-Khanyile has disclosed that she avoids kissing scenes in her roles due to her husband Skhuthazo Khanyile’s preferences.
Leleti (54) said her refusal to perform kissing scenes was a key reason why she wasn’t recast in the popular series, Generations. The renowned actress from KwaMashu, KZN, who rose to international fame with her leading role in Sarafina!, shared these insights while delivering the Simon Mabhunu Sabela lecture at the Industry Development graduation under the KZN Film Commission and KZN Tourism (KZNTAFA).
The event took place at AFDA Durban on 11 July, where numerous film and television students celebrated their graduation across various sectors. Leleti urged the graduates to remain true to their principles and wait for the right opportunities rather than compromise their comfort.
“I’m married, and my husband made it clear that kissing another man is a no. It’s part of the craft. As you progress, there will come a time when you can dictate your terms. If something doesn’t suit you, you have the right to walk away,” she explained.
“On Generations, they said they wouldn’t write for me anymore because I don’t do kissing scenes, and I chose to say goodbye. Just because there are many productions doesn’t mean you should accept everything that comes your way,” she said.
Leleti also cautioned the new graduates about the harsh realities of the industry, including the potential demands for sexual favours in exchange for roles. She praised the efforts of KZNTAFA for their role in nurturing and supporting local talent.
“Initially, there was little happening in KZN, and we had to seek opportunities in other provinces. KZN is a hub of talent that often relocates, which doesn’t benefit the province. Ideally, this province should become a rich centre for filmmaking, similar to Joburg, which has thrived thanks to KZN’s talent,” she remarked.
Leleti also hinted at her ongoing involvement in the acting industry and teased an upcoming project. One of the graduates, Sbonelo Cele, mentioned his aspiration to obtain a drone licence, a goal hindered by the R30 000 cost.
